Philanthropy
Gus Johnson’s connection to these youth organizations is deeply personal. Growing up on Detroit’s westside, his parents enrolled him in a wide range of youth sports, from hockey to basketball, baseball, and football. While he excelled in multiple sports, it was through programs like these that Gus developed his passion for athletics and the foundation for his success. His dedication ultimately earned him a baseball scholarship to the prestigious Howard University. In June 2025, Gus was honored with induction into The Westside Cubs Hall of Fame, a testament to both his achievements and the lasting impact these organizations had on his journey.

Detroit’s Police Athletic League
Founded in 1969, the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) was built on the leadership of some of Detroit’s most iconic sports figures. From the beginning, PAL has provided children with the chance to grow through athletics while building the confidence and motivation to thrive in life. Today, with year-round programs serving more than 14,000 young athletes and supported by thousands of dedicated coaches, Detroit PAL equips youth with the skills, discipline, and values needed to succeed both on and off the field.
